Since 1977, the Skulptur Projekte Münster have shaped the city’s public space. The collection, which has evolved over decades, is also a public archive that is visible within the urban landscape and allows us to draw conclusions about social developments, artistic decisions and forms of remembrance. But what is preserved – and what remains invisible?
Curator Vincent Schier addresses these questions in his lecture ‘Continuity in Change – 50 Years of Skulptur Projekte Münster: The City as a Public Collection’. As part of the Archival Challenges lecture series, he examines the Skulptur Projekte collection as an archive in public space, which, within the urban landscape, offers insights into numerous questions. The lecture will address the inclusions and exclusions of a major international exhibition, as well as questions about what is preserved – or should be preserved. Also of interest is the question of shared responsibility, which is just as relevant in this particular archive within the urban landscape as it is in considering how public space is shaped today.
The Archival Challenges lecture series brings together artists and academics to critically examine archives, their infrastructures and the power relations inscribed within them. Key themes include access to archives, the visibility of omitted histories and the development of pluralistic narratives.
