On 10 October 2026, Domgasse in Münster became an open-air radio studio. Together with medienforum münster e. V., Skulptur Projekte Münster 2027 hosted Schaufensterradio as part of the Skulptur Projekte Sessions. Beneath one of Daniel Buren's 4 Tore (1987), guests and passers-by shared their memories and perspectives on almost fifty years of Skulptur Projekte.
Since 1977, artworks have appeared, remained, and disappeared, sparking discussions and changing perceptions of familiar places. Ahead of the exhibition's fiftieth anniversary in 2027, the three-hour live broadcast explored the personal stories and encounters that shape Münster's collective memory.
The individual conversations in German are available to listen to below.
Marianne Wagner (Curator of Contemporary Art at the LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur and co-curator of Skulptur Projekte 2017) and Merle Radtke (Director of Kunsthalle Münster) discussed the City of Münster's public art collection. More than forty artworks from previous editions of Skulptur Projekte Münster now form this collection. How are these works maintained and preserved, what challenges does this involve, and why is their preservation important?
Soetkin Stiegemeier-Oehlen from Dein Brunnen für Münster e. V. and Bernd Drücke, spokesperson for Freundeskreis Paul Wulf, discussed the role of civic engagement in preserving individual artworks. Their conversation focused on Nicole Eisenman's Sketch for a Fountain (2017) and Silke Wagner's Münsters Geschichte von unten (2007), as well as the initiatives that campaigned to keep these works in public space.
Florian Voß, founder and managing director of Leezen Heroes, and David Deilmann, founder of Café FYAL, shared the stories of two businesses closely connected to Skulptur Projekte. They discussed how their ventures began during the exhibition, encounters with international art audiences, and what became of their original ideas.
Beate Sikora, a craftswoman involved in installing artworks for the previous two editions of Skulptur Projekte, offered insights into the practical work behind the exhibition and the challenges of realising artworks in public space. Angelika Schlößer, who worked in cultural education for many years, contributed her perspective as a wheelchair user. Their conversation addressed barriers to visiting the exhibition and how art in public space can be made accessible to as many people as possible.
Hildegard Brotte from Omas gegen Rechts Münster and Joline Klein, who was a ‘Skulptur-Reporterin’ (sculpture reporter) as a primary school pupil in 2007, reflected on the city and its changes from the perspectives of different generations. While Joline Klein recalled her early encounters with Skulptur Projekte, Hildegard Brotte discussed personal memories of previous editions and the political use of public space. Together, they considered what Münster might look like in the future and how its residents can help shape it.
Passers-by were also invited to share their stories and anecdotes. Tanin Sohi and Antonia Störkmann from the Skulptur Projekte 2027 communications team collected memories of five decades of Skulptur Projekte from people on Prinzipalmarkt. Some of these voices were included directly in the live broadcast.
The conversations highlighted how deeply the memories and engagement of Münster's residents are woven into the history of Skulptur Projekte. Together, they form a living archive that extends beyond the artworks and individual editions of the exhibition.
Schaufensterradio is a format developed by medienforum münster e. V. in 2022, bringing radio production out of the studio and into public space. The edition Schaufensterradio: Voices from 50 Years of Skulptur Projekte was organised by Skulptur Projekte Münster 2027 in collaboration with medienforum münster e. V., with the support of roestbar. The broadcast was moderated by Barbara Zoé Kiolbassa (Head of Mediation), with Eva Wilson (Curator) and Elinor Lazar (Digital Communications) as co-hosts – all three members of the Skulptur Projekte 2027 team. Paul Sattler from medienforum münster e. V. was responsible for radio production and technical implementation.
